BFilm Micro has teamed up with Birmingham City University’s Graduate+ scheme to produce two short films as part of an intensive summer film school.
Working from specially commissioned scripts written by Screenwriting students from the BCU School of English, selected students will form a filmmaking team guided by producers Pip Piper and Paul Green plus screenwriter Andy Conway. From pre-production, through shooting the films, to editing, the student filmmakers be supported by film industry professionals with vast experience in making films.
We also aim to inspire students with our ‘Local Heroes’ masterclasses, where guest speakers from the region will offer the lowdown on how they broke into film and TV. The Graduate+ students will also have access to film professionals whilst shooting their films.
The films will be crewed entirely by Graduate+ students with on set support from experts in their field such as cinematographers and sound recordists. The completed films will be screened in front of an invited audience at a cinema in Birmingham in October. We then plan to submit the finished films to UK and International film festivals.
The Summer Film School initiative follows on from the hugely successful Immersion training programme BFilm Micro ran in conjunction with the university in 2016.
The Immersion programme culminated in the shooting of a ‘Proof of Concept’ teaser film for ‘Augmental’, a feature film we are currently developing, with Moviehouse Entertainment on board as Executive Producers and international sales agents.
Paul Green talks about how BFilm Micro is developing new talent, changing the film industry in Birmingham, and its relationship with Birmingham City University.
Lots of info about the Augmental feature film screenplay and the proof of concept teaser too… Listen below:
BFilm Micro are delighted to announce that the immensely talented musician and artist Erica Nockalls is cast as the lead actor, Tyke, in our forthcoming proof-of-concept teaser film for Augmental, the feature film.
Following her audition, Andy Conway, screenwriter for the film, said: “It was a real pleasure to read scenes from Augmental with Erica and see the words on the page come alive.”
Following our call for scripts, we are pleased to announce that eight Birmingham-based screenwriters have been selected to work further with us on the Augmental feature film project. Congratulations to:
We received 21 entries to the project and said we would select 7 scripts to work with. The standard has been so good that we have selected 8 writers! We really loved how each of these writers responded to the brief and we are very much looking forward to working with them.
Over the next two months the writers will be working with lead screenwriter Andy Conway on the Augmental feature film script.
We know it’s going to be exciting, and that this is the first step in what we hope is a much longer relationship over the next decade.

Augmental will be an action tech thriller about a female cycle courier involved in a breathtaking life-or-death cat-and-mouse chase, picking up hidden films virtually embedded via augmented reality at locations around the city of Birmingham. Seven found-footage short films will form the basis of a series of clues that lead her to a terrifying climax.
